Yellow Sign? Call Delta Green!
I intended to at least copy and paste all my news posts from the EOI page over here until I got smart enough to embed this LJ straight into the page itself like better people do. And I have not done that. Between the EOI forum and keeping up on the comic itself, I have been letting the ol' LJ slide.

Over on the forum we are kicking around current EOI events, like this kooky Sisterhood and who the hell Barbivine Thunderjugs is or is working for. My favorite theory right now is that she's in service to Hambonetaru-Chan. My second favorite theory is that I am a damn dirty liar.

Also: this page friggin' freaks me out every time I click on it. For those of you who aren't aware of the relevance of the Sisterhood's guild symbol, I hope that gives you a good starting point for your JOURNEY INTO MADNESS.

One of these days I need to sit down and actually read me some Lovecraft. Just the rich world of allusions to the mythos get me all full of wonderful ideas that are making me re-write and revise this current storyline on a daily basis.

My husband would like to take this opportunity to remark that the only reason he plays female WoW characters is because if he's going to have to stare at someone's ass for sixty levels, he'd prefer it to be an attractive ass.

I'm still not sure if I'm going to announce where I might be found, me and Shannon are having a good time levelling up some mid-level Hordies in private, and I'm also pondering a move to a server where my RL buddy and his wife are. So it's subject to change. :)

So I'm playing world of warcraft.. and we're doing a 40 man raid, and we get our collective asses pounded into the dirt... so naturally I think/type "it hurts and stings!" to a round of laughs.. who knows if they read good old elf only inn... but it makes me go awwwwwwww elf only inn, how I miss you. So while I'm waiting on my rez, I mosey over to re-read some of those awesome strips, and zOMG its back!! Holy crap, that just made my day! And its really good stuff thus far. I always thought you were a strip that really should have made it much, much bigger then it did. Keep at it, maybe it will become as huge as it richly deserves..

Behold! Enough Lovecraft to shake a stick at: http://sprg.ssl.berkeley.edu/~wcoburn/hpl/index.html
Also here: http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/index.html

I don't know how you feel about getting possibly copywritten material online. There's a lot of controversy about whether Lovecraft's work is public domain now or not. At least some of it is and the rest of it definately will be by 2007, so you could always wait until then to start reading it online. I prefer reading books to reading online, so most of this stuff I actually own, but there's a few things that it can be harder to get a hold of.

It doesn't take much time to read just one or two Lovecraft stories. Definately make Call of Cthulhu one of the first ones you read. At the Mountaints of Madness is one of my favorites but it's longer. More than anything I love stories that have Randolph Carter in them. The Dream-Quest of Uknown Kadath, The Silver Key, The Statement of Randolph Carter. I also highly recommend The Haunter of the Dark, The Colour out of Space, Dreams in the Witch House, Pickman's Model, and The Whisperer in Darkness are each very good and really give you a feel for what Lovecraft is all about. I have a special love for Celephais, though some people may think it's kind of silly, and there isn't a single indiscribable or inhuman horror in it. Herbert West: Reanimator is a great zombie story. And my inspiration for my Halloween costume this year.

Thank you for the links! I had stumbled on Dagon Bytes a few days ago and have been reading busily, The Rats in the Walls is my favorite so far, and I've also finished The Colour Out of Space, Call of Cthulhu and Shadow over Innsmouth. Oh, and The Picture in the House, too.

The Yellow Sign graphic is recent and surely under copyright, but I've seen it used so many places that I'm sure I've got nothing to worry about, thankfully.

The Cats Of Ulthar is a really good read, despite not having the same air of creeping doom as his usual work. Where that's concerned, the ones I'd add to evilcarp's list are The Shadow Over Innsmouth and The Thing on the Doorstep.

Oh yeah, Shadow Over Inssmouth is definately required reading. I can't believe I left that out.

The only reason people like Cats of Ulthar is because the cats win.

My credentials are the fact that I've been using this King In Yellow icon on LJ for years. (It's sort of fun seeing it finally be pertinent to a discussion)

If you go by the game rules/some authors, the Yellow Sign itself is a vector. Seeing it may make some people uneasy but there's no screaming horror just from spotting it. It's when the influence of Hastur starts to kick in that things go bad - those who have seen the Yellow Sign are subject to its influence, moreso than people who have not.

Alternately it's just used to let you know that horrible things are going to happen once you see it because the kind of people who display the yellow sign out in the open are lunatics.

Couple of things
[info]sylv_
2006-11-10 07:09 am UTC (link)
1) I just saw that EOI had returned a few weeks ago. It's good to see it back!

2) The King In Yellow is actually the work of Robert Chambers, not Lovecraft. Lovecraft read Chambers' works and referenced them once in his stories. It was really August Derleth, Lovecraft's friend and a fellow writer, who pushed Hastur and grim Carcosa

I really recommend Chamber's supernatural fiction. It's a handful of short stories all conveniently found online for free because he's generally considered in the public domain. The Repairer of Reputations, The Mask, The Court of the Dragon and The Yellow Sign are considered the core stories, while the others on that page have passing references to the hastur mythos.

There's also a wiki. I was sort of stunned when I found that out only a day ago, and it's just starting out, but here you go.

3) That movie version of The Yellow Sign has finally been released on DVD (I've been waiting for years). You can grab it here: http://www.lurkerfilms.com/ I haven't seen it yet but the few reviews that floated around were generally positive

Hi there,

Hope you don't mind but I've added you as a friend on LJ. I'm chumc with [info]robinbloke, who mentioned elf only oodles of years ago. I read it back then, enjoying it hugely.

Anyway, I get confused when peopel add me to their friends lists when I don't know them, so I thought it only polite is I told you.

Hey, I just wanted to post a note somewhere to say that I loved your comic back then when it just had cut-and-paste icons, I loved it when you started drawing it in a more "conventional" style, I loved the storylines, and I love the new developments. Personally, I think you don't need to be slave to the "one punchline per comic" rule to still have something worth following. (I've seen too many comics strain to meet that "rule" to the point of breaking.)

Really, it's the storyline that keeps me coming back for more anyway. I want to see what happens next!

So, it's a great comic, and I'm really, really glad that it came back!

National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged they had funded a project with the US auto makers for the past five years. The NTSB covertly funded a project whereby the auto makers were installing black boxes in four wheel drive pickup trucks in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash. They were surprised to find in 49 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2% of fatal crashes were, "Oh, Shit!" Only the state of Texas was different, where 89.3% of the final words were, "Hey Y'all, hold my beer and watch this!"
